Scottish Osteoporosis Industry Group (SOIG)

The Scottish Osteoporosis Industry Group (SOIG) was set up in April 2003 under the auspices of the Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), Scotland, to actively promote improved diagnosis and management of osteoporosis through implementation of the SIGN (71) guideline for the management of osteoporosis.

The companies represented in SOIG are drawn from a wide variety of related fields. The work of the group is concentrated around active support of the Osteoporosis Guideline Initiative1 in which SOIG is one of three partner organisations and is represented on the steering group

The Osteoporosis Guideline Initiative or OGI. is born of a novel partnership between the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network (SIGN), the National Osteoporosis Society in Scotland (NOS) and the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) brought together to facilitate the implementation of the SIGN Guideline.

OGI has a focused programme of activity designed to improve awareness of best practice and to stimulate and support the provision of osteoporosis diagnostic and management services. This consists of the National Osteoporosis Conference to be held at the Hilton, Dunblane Hydro on 13th. October 2004, followed by a series of regional workshops (1 for every mainland health board). In addition to exploring the practicalities of implementing SIGN 71 locally, these regional workshops will seek to build on existing local initiatives, whilst sharing the experience of other regions tackling similar issues.

The work involved in the OGI programme includes the maintenance of the www.osteoporosisinscotland.org website. This website was designed and sponsored by SOIG and the content is initiated and overseen by a steering group comprising member representatives of the three partner organisations chaired by Dr Tricia Donald, Chair of SIGN 71 Development Group. The day to day running of the overall programme is co-ordinated by Christine Warkentin of Budge PR who reports to the steering group.

The group is also keen to extend membership to non-pharmaceutical industry partners who share their commitment to implementing the guideline in practice.

In addition to the work of SOIG, individual member companies will also be contributing to local and national initiatives.
